Medical and psychological counselling for women experiencing hormonal and psychosocial changes – combining specialist medical training with psychological expertise

Medical and psychological counselling, Berlin, Expats, Dr.Lotz

Hormones play a major role in shaping the menopause, yet they do not explain all the physical and emotional changes that accompany it. Somatic symptoms are often linked to questions of identity, self-esteem and shifting roles. Many women experience this time almost like a second puberty, a period of profound transformation, marked by uncertainty and often overshadowed by social taboos.

In my counselling, the focus is therefore not purely medical. What matters to me is exploring how physical and psychosocial factors interact. Hormonal changes can heighten emotional responses, while psychological strain may, in turn, intensify physical symptoms. Within a gynaecological consultation, there is often limited time to address such complex interconnections. This is where my approach begins – with counselling that brings together medical expertise and psychological insight, creating space for what is often overlooked elsewhere.

The menopause is far more than a phase of hormonal decline. It is a stage of life that each woman experiences in her own way – a time when understanding, clarity and the freedom to speak openly can bring genuine relief and new perspective..

Counselling for body and mind

Physical changes during the menopause are often closely connected with emotional and social aspects of life. My counselling therefore goes beyond a purely medical view, focusing instead on understanding how these levels influence one another. Many symptoms reflect this interaction: hormonal changes may affect mood, sleep or self-perception, while emotional strain can in turn aggravate physical discomfort. I help you to understand your symptoms, clarify possible causes and, if desired, discuss therapeutic options – always in relation to your personal life situation.

Equally important to me is working together with you to develop a new perspective and ways of moving forward. This creates a space where difficulties can be expressed and steps towards greater clarity and relief can emerge.

Particular challenges in the expatriate context

The menopause can be particularly demanding when you live abroad or find yourself in an unfamiliar cultural environment. Language barriers, cultural differences and distance from familiar networks can heighten feelings of uncertainty or isolation. In these circumstances, it is often more difficult to find orientation and a sense of support.

Having lived in several countries myself, I know how complex this stage of life can feel in a different cultural setting, and how valuable counselling is when it combines medical expertise with psychological sensitivity and intercultural understanding. My aim is to work with you to develop new perspectives and ways of moving forward that suit your individual life context.
